The humility of John the Baptist - the lesson of the latchet

John 1:27 King James Version (KJV)

27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

John the Baptist says he is unworthy to unlooses the latchet on Christ's shoe. The latchet was a leather thong used to attach the shoe to the foot.

At that time it was the job of the servant to untie the latchet on his masters shoes.

John the Baptist, recognizing his own insignificance compared to Christ, says that he (John the Baptist) is unworthy to even loosen the thong on Christ's shoes.

What a lesson in humility!

Don't forget what Christ said about John the Baptist:

Matthew 11:11 King James Version (KJV)

11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Praise the Lord
