A Lesson for Covid19 from the London Blitz

A Lesson from the London Blitz

I read this true story many years ago.

This is how I best remember it – with a little poetic licence as many years have passed.

There is a message from the London Blitz to us in the midst of this terrible Covid19 pandemic
*****
Leslie Weatherhead was a Methodist Minister in London during the blitz.

The blitz was when London was pounded by saturation bombing during the Second World War.

A young mother approached Weatherhead for counselling. Her baby had just been killed by the bombing. She was devastated.

She wanted to know from Weatherhead why God would allow such a terrible thing to happen.

As I recall the gist of Weatherhead’s reply was:

"I cannot tell you why. I don’t know the answer.

But what I can tell you is this.

On Good Friday, Jesus, the most loving and kind person who has ever lived was cruelly murdered. He was ripped away from those who loved Him and killed. It was totally unfair. His followers must have thought it was the end of their world.

Clearly evil had triumphed. Filled with sadness they must have felt devastated.

They must have asked: “Why? Why? Why?”

But then came Easter Sunday. Christ had risen from the dead.

Their beloved Lord had returned.

The love of God had triumphed over evil.”

My guess is that Weatherhead dealt very compassionately with that young mother that day as he went on to gently say:

“You are in the deep darkness of your Good Friday.

But remember that Easter Sunday came after Good Friday.

For you and your dear baby. Easter Sunday will come”

A message for all of us

Caught in the midst of this terrifying Covid19 pandemic with its soaring infection and death rates all over the world we may feel desperate.

Like those bombs falling on London during the blitz, who knows where the virus will strike next.

Or who it will strike.

We are truly going through the darkness of a Good Friday.

But take heart.

As it did two thousand years ago, Easter Sunday is coming.

The evil of Covid19 will be defeated.

Good will triumph.

Why?

Because of the victory of Our Risen Lord.

John 16:33

33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Prayer

May the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst us, and remain with us always.

Amen
