Psalm 23. Have you REALLY read it? Try this.
Really read the Scripture.
Before you go to your favourite Commentary
and translation of the Bible try answering the following questions. Almost all
the answers are in the verse itself. You will be forced to read each verse
carefully.
First ask the Holy Spirit to guide you
Psalm 23 King James Version (KJV)
23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Who is my shepherd?
Who does a shepherd care for?
Is the Lord everyone’s shepherd?
Who has the right to say “the Lord is my
shepherd”?
Was the Lord always your shepherd?
How does the Lord become your shepherd?
When did the Lord become your shepherd?
Who shall “not want”?
What does it mean to “not want”?
2 He maketh me to lie down in
green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
Who maketh me to lie down in green
pastures?
What is the significance of “to lie
down”?
Does this suggest that the sheep feel
safe and protected?
If a sheep felt threatened would it be
happy to lie down?
What is the significance of the shepherd
leading His sheep to a pasture that is green?
The shepherd leads his sheep to still
waters not rough waters.
What if the waters were rough and
turbulent? Would this make it difficult for the sheep to drink?
The sheep are led to food and water.
What does that tell us about the Lord’s provision for me?
3 He restoreth my soul: he
leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Who restoreth my soul?
Who leadeth me?
Where does the Lord lead me?
Does this mean the Lord gives me moral
direction?
What do you think is meant by “for his name’s
sake?
4 Yea, though I walk through
the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Who walks through the valley of the
shadow of death?
Does the shepherd lead the sheep around
the valley?
Will I fear evil as I walk through the valley?
What need I not fear?
Why will I not fear?
Who is with me?
What comforts me?
Whose rod and staff are they?
5 Thou preparest a table before
me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup
runneth over.
Who preparest a table before me?
What is spread over the table? Could it
be all the blessings we have in Christ?
In whose presence is the table
prepared?
Why would a shepherd anoint the heads
of his sheep with oil?
Who annointest my head with oil?
Who supplied the oil?
Whose cup runneth over?
Who is filling the cup?
What is the significance of the cup running
over?
What does this say about the generosity
of the One pouring into the cup?
6 Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of
the Lord for ever.
As a result of the above what shall
happen?
What two things shall follow me?
For how long will they follow me?
If I have been granted eternal life, for
how long will they follow me?
Where will you dwell and for how long?
Praise the Lord
