The Importance of mothers in our spiritual lives

The duties children owe to their parents

Scripture

 Proverbs 1:1-9  states

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

The duties of children

  • Children are told to hear the instruction of their father.
  • Children are told not to forsake the law of their mother.
  • Wisdom is made available to the young through their parents.
  • "hear" in v.8 means "obey" in Hebrew. So children should obey their parents.
  • "forsake" means forget. So, children are effectively told that when they grow up,  they must never forget the advice of their parents.
  • All this presumably presupposes that the parents have initially received their own wisdom from the Lord.

Consider the role played by the most important mother who has ever lived.

The Blessed Virgin Mary

How influential these other mothers must have been!

The mother of  Moses
The mother of Samuel
The mother of Timothy
The mother of Augustine
The mother of John Newton

Praise the Lord
Especially for all parents who raise children in homes where Christ is their daily guide and inspiration.
