There is an ethical standard against which we can measure ourselves. What is it?
1 John 1:8 King James Version (KJV)
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Questions on 1 John 1:8
Who does "we" refer to?
What does it mean to have no sin?
What about us? Is there no sin in us?
If we say we have no sin who are we deceiving?
If we say we have no sin who is doing the judging?
What is not in us if we claim there is no sin in us?
To think about
If we say we have no sin then we are making a judgment about ourselves. There is a saying in law that "no man may be a judge in his own cause". The reason for this is that we may be biased towards ourselves even if we don't intend to be. We have a vested interest in the decision!
What we need is an outsider to judge us, an outsider who is both objective and fair. We need an outside standard.
How about this for a start?
My guess is that most people would agree that Jesus is the pinnacle of all goodness. Let's give Jesus an ethical standard of 10/10.
Place yourself alongside Jesus. With Jesus as the standard, how do you score?
Jokes aside, if you score yourself 10/10 you need help!what
Enough said. But the good news is that Jesus came to save sinners. That is, all of us. Good news, isn't it
